Duration

Context

Challenge

The Fair Trade photo assignment focused on documenting the Blue Shrimp fishery in the state of Sinaloa, one of the most sustainable shrimp fisheries in the world. Our biggest challenges stemmed from the weather, as we aimed for sunny conditions to capture the most vibrant colors. Additionally, we had to wait for the perfect combination of wind and tide to ensure optimal fishing conditions—only then could we photograph the fishermen’s best catches. Despite these challenges, immersing ourselves in this way of life and documenting the beauty of the fishery was an incredibly rewarding experience.

Goal

Giving Artisanal Fishermen a voice

The Blue Shrimp Fishery of Sinaloa is very unique in many ways. It is regarded as the shrimp fishery with the least environmental impact in the world as it uses the wind and tide to move the boat during the most of the fishing activities. It is a fishery that has an enormous positive impact on the community and provides the locals with livelihood and opportunity to develop and increase their presence in global markets. Our goal was to document the nature of the fishery and the heart and soul of the people who dedicate their lives to it.
